Topping Toronto’s list of energetic and vibrant neighbourhoods has to be the historic Distillery District. Boasting the perfect blend of history, style and class, its a living experience that is beyond words.

Endless History

The Distillery District is tucked away in Toronto’s east end, just south of Front Street East, taking up a block between Parliament Street and Cherry Street, south of Mill Street, all the way to the train tracks. What may appear to be just a small piece of Toronto is probably the most complex and most beautiful.

The area was once the home to the largest distillery in the world: The Gooderham and Worts Distillery. Founded in 1832, this distillery pumped out 7.6 million litres of whisky for international export, assisted by its close proximity to the harbour and its immediate access to the Canadian National Railway. Talk about a perfect setting to build an industry at the time.

With time and deindustrialization, the distillery operations were shut, leaving behind an area that was simply a shell of its former glory. However, in 2001, a couple of visionary developers came up with a plan: revive the district, highlight its historical elements and build a community like none other. With a team of skilled craftsman, they restored the glory of this former industrial hub. From brick-paved streets to restored old age architecture, visitors are simply taken back in time.

They restored a total of 47 buildings, capturing their former Victorian, industrial charm. Each building, however, has been mixed with new-age technologies including green technologies and modern materials, creating a sustainable space while keeping that historic charm.

Shopping & The Arts

Arts and entertainment is the core focus of this beautiful district. The modern design mixed with historic architecture is an art piece in itself but there is more the district offers. Home to the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Soulpepper Theatre and various galleries, this area speaks art the moment you walk through the front gates. There is always something to attend, watch and experience, creating a truly vibrant and exciting environment.

In addition, the district is literred with one-of-a-king boutiques and shopping outlets, perfect for the curious adventurer looking to find something new and interesting. The community is also the home to many coveted restaurants & bars such as The Boiler House and Stirling Room.

Its not all about the buildings though. The districts is host to events year round including Nuit Blanche, TD Jazz Festival and many independent art festivals. Check out their calendar for event listings, updated regularly.

Accessible Amenities

The district is not just all show. Residents near and within the community have access to many amenities and conveniences. There is paid parking available within the district as well as access to banks and ATM’s.

The biggest convenience residents have is access to transportation options and walkable points. Folks have access to the TTC just outside the district’s gates, catered by #72 bus. In addition, the gardiner is just moments away, south of the district. Residents can also walk westward to have access to the St. Lawrence Market and many conveniences on the way, including a No Frills, LCBO and many other conveniences.

With the planned community – West Don Lands – developing next to the district, residents will see an increase in development projects, more amenities and also have access to the PanAm Games Athlete’s Village, which will drive activity considerably.

The Distillery District is a rather small community but will be catered to by an exciting new condominium project. Gooderham is an upcoming project by the Distillery SE Development Corp. to provide a residential space within the heart of the district. Located opposite the Young Centre’s entrance, this 36 storey tower will feature 328 units looking over the distillery and its surrounding communities, with fast access to commuter highways and routes.

For those looking to move in right away, the same developer has recently completed Clear Spirit Lofts, a beautiful 40 storey tower in a space right next to the Gooderham. It features 346 units, some of which are still available for sale.

If you are interested in any of the above condominiums, register for a tour of either project from the project pages or give us a call at (416) 800-0812.
