The 3 top high schools in Toronto

For families perusing Toronto homes for sale, reading the words “top school district” in a listing description is often enough to warrant a phone call and booking a private house tour. In fact, many parents are willing to push their budgets and log an extra hour of commute time just to land a house that scratches “good school zone” off their list of must-haves.

While the majority of city-dwelling families are passionate about living near one of Toronto’s best elementary schools, secondary schools arguably take on another level of importance for parents with teens.

A stepping stone to college or university, a top-tier high school can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s educational journey.

With that in mind, TheRedPin listed three outstanding secondary schools in Toronto (in no particular order), looking into their whereabouts, academic performance and histories.

1.) Northern Secondary School

Northern Secondary School is a public high school located right at the boundary of two popular Midtown neighbourhoods – Mount Pleasant East and Mount Pleasant West. Throughout the years, the school has dutifully preserved its excellent performance in both academics and extracurricular activities.

Home to over three-dozen sports teams, including the championship-winning football team The Red Knights, Northern Secondary is also recognized as the first school in all of Ontario to host a student council. Moreover, the school has stood as an ambassador for equal-opportunity learning environments, providing special education for deaf and mute students.

Along with nabbing a highly regarded score of 7.5 by the Fraser Institute rankings organization, the Educational Quality And Accountability Office (EQAO) has given the school top marks as well. Over 85 per cent of Northern Secondary’s Grade 9 students met or exceeded the provincial standards in their Academic Mathematics Course according to the EQAO.

Gifted and Advanced Placement courses, as well as a Co-op program that grants students real-world work experience, are just some of the stand-outs of Northern Secondary’s curriculum. The school also offers technical and business courses for young adults pursuing careers in fields such as robotics or communications.
